Major Allan Bevilacqua, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of Grayson, Ky, was recently presented a Quilt of Valor by Sheila Flaugher Binion, on behalf of the Carter County Quilts for Veterans and the Quilts of Valor Foundation.

Major Bevilacqua had a distinguished career as a United States Marine, serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, as well as in U.S. involvement in the Algerian War. He served 32 years in the military, from 1948 until 1980.

His Quilt of Valor was pieced by Oma Frazier, a member of the Carter County Quilts for Veterans.

In attendance that day to help honor Mr. Bevilacqua, were his wife, Gloria Kiser Bevilacqua, Ms. Binion, family, and friends.

At the presentation Major Allan Bevilacqua stated, “This truly is a grand thing, although I feel myself unworthy of it. I was but one of thousands. There were many who accomplished more, sacrificed more. There were four in particular, old comrades, who have made their final roll call, who were more deserving than I. They are Irvin Richard Stone, William Dennis Weissgerber, Peter Thomas Meletis, and John McGee Alston. With your permission, I would like to accept this fine tribute in their names.”

To make a donation to the Carter County Quilts for Veterans call the organization’s president, Johnda Adkins Berry at (606) 474-6994.
