The city of Olive Hill held their regularly scheduled meeting last Tuesday, beginning with approving the minutes from the July 16 regular meeting and the special meeting on August 29. Three council members were present in person, and one council member was present via conference call, giving the city a quorum. As a first order of business the city voted to set Trick or Treat time for the day of Halloween, Thursday, October 31 from 6 to 8 pm.
In other business the city revisited the discussion concerning the purchase of new vehicles, among other issues.
The city is in the process of securing quotes and potential financing for the proposed vehicles. This process includes determining the cost of outright purchase with no trade in as opposed to with trade in. Currently the city does not owe money on their vehicles that need replaced.
No decision was made on the city vehicle purchase, due to waiting on bids and some hesitation in anticipation of a potential drop in interest rates in the near future.
Another concern the council discussed was with the company that contracted the new water plant. Despite being well past their initial projected completion date, they have not finished what was contracted. The water plant is operational, but numerous projects need to be completed, and at present there is no estimation of when those projects might be finished. The council discussed the fact that the contracting company, Trane, is experiencing an employee shortage. The final payment is still due on the water plant project, but all work must be completed before the last installment is paid.
The city council also made a motion for Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) to act as an insurance agency while the city finds another agent. The previous agent sold their business, leaving the city without representation, and by law there are city projects that must be overseen by an insurance agent. The lack of an agent does not affect the insurance coverage of city employees, Mayor Jerry Callihan said. But an agent that is approved through the Kentucky League of Cities is necessary for many things.
The council voted to accept reports from all departments before entering into executive session. No action was taken following the executive session.
