This week, we celebrate Independence Day. We Americans have much to be thankful for. But, as we celebrate, we must remain mournful over what no one should celebrate, though multitudes foolishly do: America’s many sins against God, Who granted us our freedoms and blessings.
Like Luke 7’s sinner woman at Nain, America’s sins are “many,” (Luke 7:47), not the least of which is America’s shedding innocent blood when, since 1973, over 65 million children have been murdered in their mothers’ wombs. Make no mistake: their ocean of innocent blood cries out to God (Genesis 4:9; Revelation 6:10); and He’s not deaf. God will answer with fiery apocalyptic judgment someday. (Ezekiel 39:6). Tragically, unlike Luke 7’s sinner woman at Nain, America weeps not for her many sins against the thrice Holy God.
Remember, day and night terrifying creatures before God’s throne never cease crying, “holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, which is, and which is to come” (Revelation 4:8). Nor does America, in all her greatness, collectively care to remember that, “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). “Reproach,” here means shame and disgrace.
Where is our shame and disgrace? Where are God’s people, weeping for America’s sin and shame? Neither prince nor president can save us (Psalms 146:3). Only God can (Isiah 43:11) (“I AM the Lord, and beside Me, there is no savior.”). But God will not save America unless we, His people, turn from our wicked ways, humble ourselves and pray. Only then will God hear from His heaven and heal our land (II Chron. 7:14).
What does “our wicked ways” mean? Answer: Our living unmoved by the sea of sin and lost souls engulfing us. What can we do? We can do as did some German Christians, the Moravians, centuries ago. Mournful over sin’s sea that engulfed Germany, those Moravians staring praying around the clock. They did so for over 100 years!
After their century of tearful prayers, God sent a revival that rocked this planet: The First Great Awakening, which reached America’s colonies in the 1740s. Records from that era indicate over 1 million colonists came to Christ! Should God do likewise today, over 100 million Americans would be genuinely converted. That would radically transform this nation.
Whether God again so visits America is up to us – those who say we serve Him. We must obey II Chronicles 7:14, or God will require “at our hand” the blood of those who will perish in His coming judgment (Ezekiel 33:6). If we will but obey God’s Word, God promises He’ll restore America and remove her sin ‘n shame. So, as y’all celebrate this week, remember to diligently do all God calls us to do: repent; fast; pray; and weep that He might rend the heavens and visit us once again.
