A Louisville man is in custody following a shooting in Grayson Friday afternoon. Dylan Evans, age 27, surrendered and was arrested after the shooting and a brief stand-off in the Dixie Park neighborhood that led Grayson Mayor Troy Combs and Carter County Attorney Bryan Bayes to take to social media asking folks to avoid the area.
Details of what sparked the shooting are still sparse, but initial reports of shots fired came in to first responders around 1:45 p.m. according to sources connected to dispatch. Law enforcement responded immediately to the area and the suspect fled, taking shelter in a residence before ultimately surrendering to police.
The resident of the home posted on social media that she was asleep, and recovering from a recent surgery, when she was woken by what she at first took to be firecrackers. She said she went outside to see the police presence and gave them permission to do what they needed to do. She indicated in a separate social media post that Evans had barricaded himself in her bathroom.
Officers with Grayson PD, the Carter County Sheriff’s office, and Kentucky State Police were on site after the incident, taking photographs and using Grayson’s K-9 officer in their attempts to reconstruct the incident.
Evans is currently lodged in the Carter County Detention Center on charges that include attempted murder of a police officer, wanton endangerment in the first degree – police officer, first degree fleeing or evading a police officer – on foot, third degree terroristic threatening, second degree wanton endangerment, resisting arrest, menacing, being a persistent felony offender, public intoxication on a controlled substance (excludes alcohol), flagrant non-support, two counts of probation violation for felony offenses, and non-payment of court costs, fees, or fines.
Bond is set at $5,000 in the flagrant non-support case, and $268 for the non-payment of court costs, fees, or fines, but no bond has been set on the other charges.
This is the second officer involved shooting in Grayson this month; following a June 10 incident where 34-year-old Christopher Carpenter is accused of striking an officer with his vehicle. Both incidents have resulted in charges of attempted murder of a police officer for the accused.
