While trucks with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, along with city and county crews, worked overtime scraping and salting state routes and secondary roads respectively, heavy snows pre-empted many meetings.
The Carter County Board of Education chose to reschedule their Monday night meeting, moving it from last Monday, January 15, out a week to this past Monday, January 22. That meeting was held as a special meeting, to replace their regular meeting. Items on the agenda included a school health and nutrition public forum, requests for alternate school schedules to meet individual student needs, a salary table amendment for student employees, and contract awards for phase 1 special inspections of the new school site and a change of order for survey services.
Olive Hill City Council, meanwhile, cancelled their Tuesday, January 16 regular meeting, without setting another date for meeting this month. Items on that agenda included an update on the Trane energy savings project, and presumably discussion on the low water levels at the town lake and the impact recent precipitation has had on those levels. The agenda also included a resolution on allowing the police department to join the ATF Violent Crimes Task Force, as well as general department reports and treasurer’s reports.
Olive Hill Chamber of Commerce president Crystal Branham sent out a message to chamber members on Thursday, January 18, cancelling that evening’s regularly scheduled meeting as well.
“Given the weather forecast for this evening, I am going to cancel our monthly meeting,” Branham wrote, adding “Everyone stay safe, and warm.” She said the group would take up business again at their regularly scheduled February meeting.
But while some groups cancelled events as a second round of snow blanketed the county, others braved the elements.
Grayson City Council met in special session on Thursday evening, with the only item on the agenda an executive session to discuss employee issues. According to city clerk Dawnita Lewis the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the hiring of a city treasurer. After several hours of discussion, Lewis said, the council returned to regular session with no action taken before adjourning the meeting.
