The City of Olive Hill called a special meeting on Thursday, April 4, with two items on the agenda. Those two items were choosing a new city clerk, and the first reading of ordinance 24 which modifies the classifications of the police force in Olive Hill. The council had a quorum, with only two members absent, and Mayor Jerry Callihan present via telephone. The meeting was opened by a member of the council, the minutes were read, and all normal procedures were followed.

The council discussed the candidates for city clerk, of which there were a total of four. The mayor informed council that he believed all the candidates would be good additions to the city, saying that two of the candidates were well-qualified and one was extremely qualified. Of the possible candidates, the mayor recommended Sandra Callihan to the council. Ms. Callihan is no relation to the mayor.

Council discussed the candidates, with two of the council members who had been present for three of the interviews offering input of their own. The general consensus was that any or all of the candidates who applied for the position would benefit the city, but after more discussion a motion and second was made to hire Sandra Callihan for the position. The vote was unanimous in the affirmative.

The city is permitted to fix the compensation of city employees and non-elected city officers with a personnel and pay classification plan based on KRS 83A.70. Ordinance 24 covers the modification of payment classification, and discussed at Thursday’s special meeting was how this would impact the city’s police department. The first reading of the ordinance was at the special meeting, and the council will vote after the second reading at its next regularly scheduled meeting.
