Flannery’s fertility preservation measure passes House floor

Frankfort – The Kentucky House of Representatives gaveled in on day 21 of the 2023 Regular Session of the General Assembly to vote on several pieces of legislation, including HB 170.

HB 170, sponsored by Representative Patrick Flannery, requires health insurance plans to cover the cost of sperm or egg preservation procedures before a cancer patient receives chemo-therapy or radiation.

“As a fellow cancer survivor, I want to ensure better health outcomes for patients. Fertility preservation treatment can often cause delay in necessary lifesaving treatment due to costs, particularly for women,” said Representative Flannery. “This measure will grant patients peace of mind while ensuring they will be able to begin cancer treatment as soon as possible.”

Currently, there is sparce insurance coverage for fertility preservation procedures for cancer patients, resulting in added costs and delay to the patient.
