Local and area residents turned out in force for the Fourth of July celebration at Tres Hermanos Nuñez in Grayson. Everyone braved the heat and threatening rain to celebrate the country’s independence with music, good food, games, and of course fireworks.
Parking stretched for blocks away from the Tres Hermanos Nuñez restaurant and traffic slowed to a crawl to accommodate pedestrians who walked around, stepped over – or in the case of several small and not so small children, who splashed through – the puddles left by earlier rains. Music filled the air and lines formed as the restaurant gave free food (for a limited time) to those who attended. Lines also formed for bouncy houses and slides, and to ride a mechanical bull. Huge speakers pumped out everything from Elvis’ Jailhouse Rock, complete with big screen video, to assorted dance music that attendees used to good effect.
The event drew people from all across the area including Ohio and West Virginia, and Tres Hermanos owner Misael Nuñez said that he couldn’t be happier.
“I just love seeing people enjoy themselves,” Nuñez said of his motivation for putting on the annual event. “And today is a really special day. I always enjoy this, because this is one of the best months for me.”
Nuñez said that he waits for July all year long because it is his favorite month, and he loves to see children enjoying good food and entertainment with their families while celebrating Independence Day.
Richie Wolfe of Olive Hill brought his children to the event and took a little break during the festivities while his children ‘tailgated’ in the bed of his truck.
“We came down to see the fireworks and let the kids enjoy themselves,” Wolfe said.
This year was his first year attending the event, and he and his children were excited to experience everything.
“They’ve been having the time of their lives,” he said. “Freedom and independence are the most important things,” Wolfe added. “And it’s good to remember that and honor our veterans while we celebrate and enjoy ourselves.”
Veteran Mike Letterer from Greenup attended the event and said that it meant a lot to him that people could come out on Independence Day and celebrate the freedom that so many veterans fought for over the years since the original July Fourth.
“It looks like a really good turnout and that everyone is enjoying themselves,” Letterer said.
Bob Newman, who served from 1967 through 1970, sat in front of the Veterans Outreach Center and said simply, “I like it,” of the celebration.
“We should salute all of our brothers and sisters in all branches of service so this country can stay free,” he said.
Newman said that he thinks events like the one put on by Tres Hermanos Nuñez are a great way to do just that while enjoying all the things freedom and independence make possible.
