I-64 improvement project now fully underway in Boyd County

One-lane traffic each direction, mile markers 184 to 191

FLEMINGSBURG – The Transportation Cabinet’s $9.5 million project to improve I-64 in Boyd County is fully underway now as contractors make roadside and pavement repairs along seven miles of the interstate.

Currently, I-64 is one lane each direction between the Cannonsburg and Catlettsburg exits (mile markers 184 to 191). Eastbound and westbound traffic entering the work zone must merge left as the right lane is closed.

Traffic will stay in one lane throughout construction and will be shifted side to side as needed. Exit ramp traffic entering the highway must yield to oncoming traffic.

In addition, the speed limit on I-64 has been reduced to 55 miles per hour and will be monitored by law enforcement to protect workers and travelers.

The I-64 renovations started in March as crews began to fix embankment slides and to repair ditchlines. Roadside repairs, drainage work, and in-depth pavement repairs will continue at key locations and bridge ends this spring and summer. New blacktop resurfacing of all travel lanes is also planned. Contractors have until Nov. 30 to complete the project.

The project is being done by Mountain Enterprises, Inc., under a $9,511,750.43 low-bid Transportation Cabinet contract.

Because the work zone includes both the Cannonsburg and Catlettsburg exits and is a busy part of I-64 – as many as 14,000 vehicles a day use the highway – motorists are advised to be prepared for traffic delays or use alternate routes through this fall.

Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
