Paving Along I-64 in Northeast Kentucky to Wrap Up by Thanksgiving

Work zones continue in Rowan and Carter counties

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. – Paving work along I-64 in northeast Kentucky should be complete and all construction barrels removed by Thanksgiving.

The work’s part of three Kentucky Transportation Cabinet highway improvement projects totaling $35 million. Currently, 14 miles of resurfacing work is wrapping up in Carter and Rowan counties.

CARTER COUNTY

Resurfacing and repairs to I-64 between the Smith Run overpass and the Tygarts Creek bridge, mile markers 153 to 160, in Carter County will continue over the next two weeks. Contractors will complete paving, shoulder repairs, guardrail installation, and other final construction.

Once safety checks are complete, crews will remove barrels and four-lane traffic will resume. Until then, motorists should note the following traffic changes:

  • Right lane closed each direction, merge left approaching work zone. Yield at on ramps from KY 2 to I-64. Speed limit 55 mph. Watch for traffic shifts inside work zones.

(This project is part of an overall renovation along 18 miles of I-64 in Carter County. Next year, beginning in the spring, the work zone will shift eastward with construction and lane closures between the Tygarts Creek bridge/Olive Hill Exit 161 and Grayson, mile markers 160 to 171.)

ROWAN COUNTY

Resurfacing and repairs to I-64 from the Rowan County rest areas to the Carter County line, mile markers 141 to 148, are continuing. Contractors plan to complete paving, shoulder and guardrail repairs next week then reopen all travel lanes. Until then, motorists should note the following traffic changes:

  • Right lane closed eastbound, merge left approaching work zone; left lane closed westbound, merge right approaching work zone. Speed limit 55 mph.

Electronic message boards are set up on each project to warn travelers of traffic conditions and delays. Motorists should watch for narrow lanes and traffic shifts in work areas, heed all warning signs, and use caution to protect themselves and workers.

Along with six miles of resurfacing in western Rowan County completed this summer, these interstate projects will bring smoother pavement, drainage repairs, new guardrail, cable barrier, and other enhancements to 30 miles of the interstate in Rowan and Carter counties.
