Olive Hill is gearing up for nearly a week of holiday celebrations, with Homecoming, Fourth of July celebrations, and two fireworks displays planned over this weekend and next Thursday.
Events started last week, with the pageant to award Homecoming titles, and continue this coming Friday, with the Cruise-In at 6 p.m. Or, if you’re more interested in music and theater, the Olive Hill Center for Arts & Heritage (OHCAH) hold their annual On With The Show event on Friday night as well, in the gymnasium of the old Olive Hill High School. The show starts at 7 p.m. with dinner served beginning at 6 p.m. Then, at 9 p.m. Carter County Relay for Life will host a Hope Glows Night Glow Fun Run/Walk, at West Carter High School.
On Saturday you can start your morning with a pancake breakfast, served at the Olive Hill First Christian Church, from 7:30 – 10:30 a.m. Then, hang around for the parade at 1 p.m. Lineup for the parade begins at 11 a.m. That’s right after the pancake breakfasts finish, so if you plan on marching in the parade, you might consider carb loading at the pancake breakfast first.
Sunday is a rest day, then on Monday the events begin again with a fireworks display at Wilson Fitness & Martial Arts, with celebrations scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
On Wednesday, July 3, First Baptist Church host the Community Church Service, at 7 p.m.
Then, on the Fourth of July, come back out. The OHCAH will host another art event, this one focused more on dance, with “Timeless Threads – Fashion Time Warp: Dance Across the Decade.” That begins at 2 p.m. with tickets and registration available online at ohcah.org. Tickets for On With The Show, including dinner, are also available at that site.
Speaking of dinner, since the Center isn’t offering that option with their dance event, after watching the competition wander down to Duvall & Moore Funeral Home for free hotdogs, featuring the famous Burton’s Drive-In hotdog sauce, beginning at 6 p.m. Food is free, but other organizations also plan to set up and sell drinks, additional snacks, and desserts as fundraisers for their groups; so, if you want something extra, that’s also an option.
After filling up on hotdogs you can walk some of those calories off moving down to the Depot, for a live musical performance from Beechy Creek, at 7 p.m., or just stay put. Both the parking lot of Duvall & Moore, and the area in front of the Depot offer good views of the city’s fireworks display, which begins at dusk.
It’s a busy week, full of events coming up. Stay hydrated. Wear sunscreen. But most importantly come out, bring the kids, and have fun.
