Gayle Douglas Smith

1944-2021

Mr. Gayle Douglas Smith, age 76, of Olive Hill, Kentucky, passed away Friday, April 2, 2021, at St. Claire Healthcare in Morehead, Kentucky.

Gayle was born November 16, 1944, in Franklin County, Kentucky, a son of the late Lew and Sophronia Booth Smith.

Gayle was a retired Postmaster of Olive Hill where he served 34 years, former Olive Hill mayor, served on the City Council, member of the Olive Hill Jaycees, former president of the West Carter boosters club, and a current board member of FIVCO. He was president of the Carter County Democratic Party and was also a member of the Selective Service Commitee. Gayle was an avid U.K. sports fan and he enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Scott Smith, Lawrence Smith, George Smith, and Paul Smith, and four sisters, Louise Goins, Betty Smither, Beatrice Atha, and Loretta Adams.

Gayle is survived by his longtime companion, Loretta Burchett of Olive Hill, Kentucky; two sons, Douglas Smith (Stacy) of Valley Center, California, and David Smith (Teresa) of Winchester, Kentucky; one daughter, Dana Smith (Jennifer) of Lebanon, Ohio; two step sons, Michael Burchett (Miranda) and Eric Burchett (Jake), both of Olive Hill, Kentucky; one step daughter, Nicki Burchett (Scott Hardin) of Morehead, Kentucky; and 13 grandchildren. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2021, at Globe Funeral Chapel, 17277 West Highway US 60, Olive Hill, Kentucky 41164.

At Gayle’s request there will be no funeral service.
