The Old Book Lady: Essay Contest winners recognized

The Old Book Lady here to say, even though I have not written anything for a while, I have been hard at work.

We have had all the winners of the essay contest acknowledge receipt of their notifications and prize money has been delivered. We had a lot of great entries; however, we could only pick three for high school age and three for middle school age entries. Our judges agreed that we had some good entries. I liked them all, and was glad I did not have to choose. For our three winners from high school; first place went to Emma Riggs, second to Jill Knipp, and third place to Olivia Debord. For our middle school entries, we also had great papers, but we only had one winner for this level. The one winner that was chosen was Kaitlyn Maggard. The reason for this was, though the other papers were well written, they did not follow all the rules on the entries. Rules are rules. Even though I hate rules sometimes, we need them, and must follow them.

Our biggest rule broken in this case related to entries that did not have enough words. The rule was 400 words, but we did not have 400 on all the entries for middle school level. Now, we can certainly all learn from this, and follow the rules all the way through.

I’d like to say thank you to all who took the time to enter our contest, for both levels. We want to thank our sponsors for their donations in making the cash prizes possible. Those sponsors are Janet Cline – Brandon Burton of Burton’s Garage/Carter County Judge Executive – Jeremy D. Wells of Carter County Times Newspaper – Wayson King of My House of Horror – Robbie Garris of RG Network Solutions LLC – and Jason Duvall of Duvall and Moore Funeral Home and Cremation Service

I am happy to say the theme for the papers leaned toward having a public library so all children and adults can have an even opportunity to access the same materials and information, regardless of financial situation.

We do try to provide materials and as much help to everyone as we can. The library is free to access regardless of your financial situation.

We always ask for suggestions of events or supplies programming that people would like to have implemented. Through that we can provide more for our communities.

On other notes we are about to embark on the summer reading program. This will be running every Wednesday through June and July from 12 – 1 p.m., at both branches. All children who come to the event will receive a free lunch. We will be reading stories, doing activities related to the stories, and in general just having fun while traveling the world in stories from nine different countries.

We want to shout out a really loud thank you to Donna Stamper with the Operation Care Family Resource Center OHES, to Carla Sparks with the Prichard Family Resource Center, and KCU for all their help financing our adventure. KCU is doing a virtual tour all nine weeks also. Check our website for the QR Code and more information. That part of summer reading is going to be awesome also. Thank you Naulayne and Josh.

Our collaboration this year will bring all the children in Carter County a huge summer reading program. So, we’re looking forward to all the wonderful adventures we are embarking on over the next two months. Please join us for some or all our Wednesdays in June and July.

We had a great Summer Kickoff event. Thank you to all who attended. We appreciate all of you. For this particular event, a special shout out to the Carter Caves State Park Rangers that attended and brought their little critters and information with them. The children enjoyed this. Thank you so much.

We’re looking forward to having a lot of fun filled days this summer. Come out to the Olive Hill or Grayson branch of your Carter County Public Library and support us while having fun with us.
