Extension Notes: Senior Farmer’s Market vouchers to be distributed June 22

By: Rebecca Konopka
Carter County Extension Agent

Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program vouchers will be distributed at the Northeast Community Action Agencies on Tuesday, June 22nd. Vouchers will be available in Olive Hill from 8:30 AM -12:30 PM and in Grayson from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

Seniors will need to stay in their cars and staff will come to them to complete the sign-up process. Participants must be at least 60 years old and have proof of age with them. Seniors must also have an income less than what is listed below.

Participants may only sign up for vouchers once each summer. If someone is picking up vouchers on behalf of a senior participant, they must have a signed proxy form from the senior participant. Contact the Extension Office at 474-6686 to obtain a proxy form prior to June 22nd. Vouchers will be distributed on a first come-first served basis.

The purpose of the Kentucky Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) is to gain market access for farmers as well as improving nutrition of low-income families by providing them better access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Funding for Kentucky’s program comes from federal and state resources. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) serves as the lead agency for Sr FMNP. The low-income seniors are provided with $30 in checks to purchase fresh, unprocessed, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs at State-approved farmers’ markets.

Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of economic or social status and will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnic origin, national origin, creed, religion, political belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, marital status, genetic information, age, veteran status, or physical or mental disability.
