When Psalm 1 says, “blessed” is the man, it means happy, it means blessable. Blessed is the man: The Hebrew word esher is here translated blessed, which has the idea of happiness or contentment. Esher is a form of the Hebrew word ashar, which in its root means “to be straight” or “to be right.” Blessed is the man speaks of the happiness, the blessedness, the contentment in the life of the man or woman who is “right” or “straight” with God. The righteous man will be a blessed man, a happy man. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord and in His law does meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by rivers of water that bringeth forth his fruit in his season. His leaf also shall not wither. Whatsoever he does, shall prosper.
The first thing it says to do is this, “Nor standeth in the way of sinners.” Look at how the people behave around you that you are associating with. When you got saved – you became God’s ambassador. An ambassador has one job and that is to make the person you represent look good. We have one job and that is to make Jesus look good. Did we make Jesus look good on the job, on the road, at the store? The phone has lots of counsel.
The second thing it says to do is this, “Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” The scorner is a griper. It is a complainer. It is an unhappy camper. It is an egregious sin against God to gripe. Not to gripe too much but to gripe at all. God killed thousands of the children of Israel because they griped. Well, you may say, I don’t gripe like the world, etc. The Bible says, “Neither murmur ye.” It is a sin to gripe. Let your speech always be seasoned with grace. Let not corrupt communication come out of your mouth. The Bible says, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight.” We are the people with joy, joy unspeakable. Griping is a sin. If we don’t bridle the tongue, our religion is worthless, it is vain. The word gripe and scorn have something in common and that is that they both express negative feelings, specifically showing displeasure and dissatisfaction with something or someone. Both share negative feelings and have a venting attitude.
We need these promises activated in our life. I am not going to let my eyes and my ears be where the “not God’s way” stuff is invading. I got one job in life; I am going to make Jesus look good. I am absolutely done griping or being scornful about anything. We all have issues going on in life. As a child of God, if we are to prosper, then we are to live in alignment with his Word every day striving to be more Christ like! Have a blessed week.
Amen! So be it!
