Joyful Noise: The choices/decisions we make

By Pastor Naomi Mitchell

Carter County Times

Have you ever had to make a choice or a decision that later just turned out bad? That decision tormented you for days and months, or even years. A big part of life is about making choices daily. Sometimes, we have one or more choices to choose from and sometimes there are none to choose from. There are times when we may need someone else to decide on our behalf. Other times we may need to seek wise counsel. We are all in this together. Some are better at it than others.

Often parents may say these one-liner quotes to their children to help them make better choices/decisions.

“You can be mad without being mean.”

“You are in charge of your body, and I am in charge of mine.”

“How can this ‘oops’ help us learn today?”

“You have already asked, I have already answered. Sorry if you do not like the answer.”

“You do not have to be friends with everyone, but you must be friendly.”

“If we make the commitment we must show up.”

“Teamwork makes the dream work.”

I like these one-liners that we as adults could choose to practice.

“Fear doesn’t stop death; it stops life.”

“If it costs you your peace, it’s too expensive.”

“People only see the decisions you made, not the choices you had.”

“Never take criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from.”

“The magic you are looking for is in the work you’re avoiding.”

“Ships are safe in the harbor, but that’s not what they are built for.”

“Ambition without distraction turns into anxiety.”

“To live a life most people don’t, you must be willing to do what most people won’t.”

“You can do anything, but not everything – focus.”

“If you want to make the wrong decision, ask everyone.”

“Those who don’t move won’t notice their chains.”

“It’s okay to live a life most people don’t understand.”

“If someone could only see your actions and not hear your words, what would they say your priorities are?”

“No risk, no story!”

Whatever choices you have or decisions you must make, always know that the Bible is your guide. There are scriptures to help us make wise decisions along with prayer.

Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  James 1:5 – If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Philippians 4:6 – Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Isaiah 30:21 – And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, this is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. 1 John 5:14 – And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us. James 3:17 – But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. Isaiah 41:10 – Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Proverbs 3:6 – In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

How wonderful to know that when we acknowledge and seek God first, about many things, He has promised to direct our path! Amen! So be it!
