Joyful Noise: You

By Pastor Naomi Mitchell

For Carter County Times

If you are serious about changing your life you will find a way and if not, you will find an excuse. You aren’t stuck; you are just afraid of change. You don’t have to be great to start, but you must start to be great. Nothing changes if nothing changes. Don’t just exist, live. Love didn’t hurt you. Someone who doesn’t know how to love, hurt you. Your perspective can be your power or your prison. Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful. Your life is as good as your mindset. Spend money on experiences and not things. Don’t listen to what people say, watch what they do. Some losses set us free. A year from now, you will wish you had started today. Motivation gets you started but habit is what keeps you going. When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. You cannot become what you want by remaining who you are. Losers quit when they fail but winners fail until they succeed. Their opinion is not your reality. Don’t miss out on something that could be great just because it could also be difficult. Not deciding is a decision. Sometimes you don’t get what you want because you deserve better. Be interesting and not perfect. Let go of what no longer serves you. Choose what is best for you. Connect with those who nourish you. Love yourself first, and the rest will follow. Go after dreams and not people. Enjoy small moments, they are important. Stop complaining. Be friends with people who encourage you and do not tear you down. Pick one skill you want to work on and get better at it every day. Commit to the goals you want to accomplish. Spend less time on technology; read, journal, go on walks outside more. Never respond to rudeness. When people are rude to you, they reveal who they are, not who you are. The less you respond to rudeness, critical, argumentative people, the more peaceful your life will become. Don’t worry if people think you are weak for not responding. Remember, God is enough as a witness to it all and He is the most just of judges. Never say more than necessary. Don’t allow your emotions to overpower your intelligence. Lower your expectations from others. Let your success do the talking. Ten different people, ten different opinions, stop pleasing! Remember your haters are your fans. Don’t be afraid to say “NO.” Don’t aspire to be perfect. Know your truth and be ok with someone else not believing you. Win through your actions and never through arguments. Telling the truth is always worth it. Leave things better than you found them. Everyone has a story so be gentle with people. You are not the only one. Nothing lasts forever. There is a season for all things. Don’t take advice from someone you don’t want to be like.

Bottom line: Things out of your control include others’ opinions of you, outcomes, things in the past, the way people speak to you, the way people treat you, aging, other people’s beliefs and behaviors, time and external events.

Things in your control include your attitude, the way you speak, the way you treat others, your response, processing emotions, your boundaries, and who you choose to spend your time with. Focus on what you can control and let go of what you can’t control. You can’t control the storm, but you can learn to sail. If you lived these, your life would completely look different with the help of the Lord. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you every day. Just be like Jesus! You can’t do anything without Jesus. Everything is better with Jesus in it. (credit: quotes from MindShiftMotivation)
