Ask Daryl – Your Professional Organizer: Be kind

Helping others is something that adds value to our lives and gives those we help hope. However, sometimes we forget that their opinions matter and that even though we are offering to fix things or help declutter we need to be careful not to take charge.
Listening is just as important as providing aid. We need to be conscientious of feelings and surroundings. Even if it’s helping a friend or family member, if we don’t listen to what they need it can end up in an uncomfortable situation. We may think we know what they need, but do we really understand all that’s involved? There may be certain things we can’t move, or cook, or clean. There may be other people in the home, and our help may interrupt their way of living. If we just take some time to ask before we help, it will reduce stress on the part of those we are helping.
If we are going to be working with others that are also there to help, keep in mind that there needs to be consensus in the way things are done. Communication with a team is essential to get the most beneficial results. This type of project could consist of helping with caregiving, or cleaning where details matter.
Lack of communication can result in stress. So, if we are kind and listen, it becomes a welcome experience for everyone.
It’s as simple as that!
