East Carter threat an internet hoax

District calls report “unsubstantiated”

The Carter County School System released a statement last Thursday acknowledging that adminstrators at East Carter High School had been alerted to a social media post circulating among students – reportedly via a SnapChat screen grab – that contained an unspecified threat.

The district stated in their release that the Grayson Police Department, the district, and school administrators had investigated the report and “determined that the threat is unsubstantiated.”

They also reported “narrow(ing) down the origin of the post.”

They further state they, “appreciate and understand everyone’s concern in the matter and encourage continued vigilance for the safety of our children.”

When contacted for further information on the matter, the school district directed the matter to the Grayson Police Department.

When contacted Tuesday evening Chief Travis Steele said his department had investigated and determined that the threat did not originate locally. Rather, he explained, it was a legitimate, but old, threat from another community that has been circulated on social media recently. Each time it appears it is wrongly attributed to whatever community has shared it. Steele said Grayson is not the only community in the area to fall victim to the faux-threat. But, he said, his department always takes all potential threats seriously and Investigates them fully.

In this instance, thankfully, no legitimate threat to East Carter High School was found.
