Legislative Update from Senator Webb

FRANKFORT– Every year, the Kentucky State Fair unfolds like a majestic panorama, painting a vivid picture of all the richness our state embodies. From the farthest reaches, each element came together as exhibits and events, each a testament to the indomitable spirit and dedication of our people.

When legislative responsibilities intertwine with my love for livestock at the State Fair, multitasking becomes second nature. Between committee meetings, I find myself juggling grain, water, hay, and the ever-important tools of brush and shovel. It’s a hands-on experience, and for those who’ve immersed themselves in a swine 4-H project or early morning pig care, the significance of these moments is crystal clear.

A highlight that always warms my heart is seeing our young innovators at the 4-H and the Future Farmers of America exhibits. Their enthusiasm, involvement, and ambition light up the fairgrounds, giving us a peek into the promising future of Kentucky.

The State Fair was also the venue for our interim joint committee meetings this week. Held at the epicenter of our agricultural gala, we delved deep into the challenges and opportunities facing Kentucky. I wear my role on the Agriculture committee as a badge of honor, dedicating myself to the legacy and forward momentum of our state.

The Kentucky Farm Bureau Ham Breakfast was a standout event this year, shattering previous records. The commendable ham, produced by Ronny and Beth Drennan of B and B Foods, Broadbent, Kuttawa, went under the hammer for an astounding ten million. A heartfelt thanks to the buyers as their generosity will ripple across the state, aiding the Boys and Girls Clubs across the Commonwealth, spearheading a new mental health initiative, and building homes for 57 Knott County families affected by the 2022 floods.

Back in the district, I had an unforgettable moment as I attended the ribbon-cutting to kick off the Boyd County Fair. Events like these, imbued with community spirit and collaboration, encapsulate what Kentucky is all about. In the name of community spirit, I also want to give huge kudos to Greenup County on their impressive feat of being named the grand champion of the 2023 open beef show with the meat goat. Their achievement underlines the excellence we continually reach for in our farming endeavors.

On the national front, I was honored to participate in the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). The event was a whirlwind of committee sessions, networking, and cherished moments with long-time friends and colleagues. It brings me immense joy to share that come 2024, Louisville will welcome the NCSL, allowing us to flaunt the treasures of Kentucky and enhance our economy in the process.

As the 2023 state fair curtain comes down and we stride into the remainder of the year, my commitment to serving and elevating Kentucky remains steadfast. For more information on the Kentucky General Assembly, visit the legislative record online at www.legislature.ky.gov.
