The Olive Hill Center for Arts & Education has a new addition to their complex on the hill – Elaine Swinney is now offering violin lessons in the space she is renting in the Shoppes on the Hill building.
Swinney, who met with the Olive Hill Chamber during their last regular meeting, recently relocated to the Morehead area, and has worked as a professional violinist and private instructor since 1983.
Debbie Baker Harman, musical director of the Center’s annual On With the Show and Christmas on the Hill showcases, introduced Swinney to the Chamber crowd, noting that her friend’s credentials included working with touring groups and artists including the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the Moody Blues, and Kansas, among others.
Swinney’s resume notes that in addition to those listed by Harman, she’s performed with Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn, Amy Grant, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Engelbert Humperdink, and prog rock band YES.
Before relocating to eastern Kentucky she lived in Chesapeake, Virginia where she performed as a contracted member of the Virginia Symphony, Virginia Opera, and the Williamsburg Symphonia. She has also performed as a member of the Columbus Symphony, in Columbus, Ohio; the Lancaster Festival Orchestra, and Ohio Valley Symphony, and served as assistant concertmaster of the Newark-Granville Symphony.
Though she does still perform, including private events and weddings, her focus now, she said, is on teaching.
She offers lessons for all age and ability levels.
“The lessons are structured toward the learning style of each student, with an emphasis on positive reinforcement while learning basic elements of music (along with) the nuances of the violin or viola,” she explained.
“I genuinely enjoy working with students,” she added. “I feel I have a great deal of information and encouragement to pass along to others, and a life spent in music from which to share.”
Swinney is a union musician, affiliated with the International and American Federation of Musicians, Local 125.
