Grayson mourns loss of Suttles

Staff Report
Carter County Times

The city of Grayson and firefighters across the county, state, and region are in mourning this week with the sudden and unexpected death of Duane Suttles on Saturday.

Suttles was well known and well liked for his work with the Grayson fire department, where he served in various roles, most recently as an assistant chief.

Suttles also served as vice president of the Eastern Kentucky FireFigher’s Association, and treasurer of the Kentucky Firefighter’s Association.

But while folks across the state knew Suttles for his work as a first responder, folks in Grayson knew him for his tireless work for the community he called home.

Suttles served for 15 years on the Grayson City Council, from 2005 to 2020, before taking on the role of city clerk. His knowledge of city ordinances and KRS were invaluable in both those roles, according to colleagues, as was his calm and steady presence.

His commitment to making Grayson and all of Carter County a better place for children and families was also reflected in his work as an officer and board member with the Carter County Kiwanis Club.

He was a good man, and we will miss him.
