Optimist Club Assists Local Law Enforcement With Shopping for Kids

Morehead, KY – For the past few years, the Morehead Optimist Club has joined with local law enforcement to assist with giving children a Christmas shopping spree. This year the Morehead Police Department’s “Shop With a Cop” event and the KSP Post 8 “Shop with a Trooper” both benefited from the generosity of the Optimist Club. Each child is allocated a certain amount of money to use on games or toys and clothes, and they are assisted with shopping by Morehead Police officers and KSP Troopers. TPR Scott Ferrell, Public Affairs Officer for KSP Post 8 in Morehead coordinates the Post 8 event each year while Tiffany Lowe and Kerri Johnson Moran do so for the Morehead Police Department. Neither activity is a small undertaking, and both agencies rely heavily on local businesses, organizations, and individuals to make it happen. The Morehead Optimist Club is supporting the 2023 program with a $1,000 donation to each agency made possible through their bingo operation at Cave Run Bingo. “We are extremely appreciative of what the Morehead Police Department and the Kentucky State Police stand for,” said Optimist Club President Bill Redwine. “Their efforts in making sure that kids have a great Christmas is of great interest to us.” More than two hundred area kids were given the opportunity to shop with law enforcement this year.

The Optimist Club of Morehead has been supporting local youth since 1964. Other programs and service projects that the Club engages in include sponsoring the T-Ball league for Morehead Parks & Recreation, Tri-Star Basketball, Respect for Law, Essay and Oratorical Competitions, Junior Golf, RCSHS Theater and countless other youth programs through their charitable bingo programs at Cave Run Bingo.
