We will be having several new events during the upcoming months. First, we will be sponsoring an essay contest during April. The essay will be on the subject, “Why do we need a public library?” We will have local teachers judging our essays. Students in middle and high schools from both East and West schools will be encouraged to enter. We will have first, second and third place prizes for both age groups. Each group will be judged separately. The prizes for each level will be announced later, when the rules are published. We are in the process of collecting donations for the prizes that will be presented at the end of the contest. If you wish to make a donation for the prizes for the contest please drop it off at the Grayson or Olive Hill branch.
We will also be hosting a Summer Reading Program during the months of June and July. We will be traveling, story wise, around the world. We have fairy tales and folk tales planned from nine different countries. A few of the planned activities include issuing each of our participants a passport, which will be marked for each country they travel to in story form, and sampling cultural activities and treats from those countries. We will be starting from the USA, and traveling to eight other countries. Each of our stories will include appropriate activities, and we will be partaking in a food that originated from each country. We will be starting pre-registration so look for the forms to come home school or pick them up at either branch.
I hope everyone will plan to attend and participate in both events; either by entering the contests, or coming to our summer reading program. We look forward to having our children involved in our plans for this Spring.
