Strength for Life: Spring energy

By Tracy Deborde, ACSM-CPT

As temperatures warm and daylight stretches a little longer, April brings a natural shift in energy. Gardens are being prepared, yards are coming back to life, and many people feel ready to move more after the slower winter months. This seasonal transition makes spring an ideal time to reconnect with outdoor activity and rebuild consistent movement habits.

Fresh Air, Sunshine, and Daily Steps

Spending time outdoors offers benefits that go beyond physical activity. Fresh air, natural light, and movement can improve mood, energy levels, and overall well-being after a long winter.

Our community is fortunate to have excellent outdoor spaces that support walking, hiking, and trail running:

  • Carter Caves State Park
  • Grayson Lake
  • Grayson City Walking Trail
  • Ashland Central Park

Walking these trails counts toward daily step goals and weekly cardiovascular activity. Even short walks add up, and many people find it easier to stay consistent when movement is paired with sunshine and scenery.

Getting Steps in the Spring

For heart health and general wellness, aiming for 7,000–10,000 steps per day is a realistic and effective target for many adults. Spring weather makes it easier to break steps into manageable sessions — a morning walk, an afternoon break outside, or an evening stroll after dinner.

Trail walks and light hikes also challenge balance, coordination, and muscular endurance, making them excellent forms of functional exercise.

Why Strength Training Matters

While outdoor movement increases naturally this time of year, strength training remains essential, especially as people prepare for summer activities like hiking, yard work, travel, and recreational sports.

A consistent strength routine helps:

  • Reduce injury risk
  • Improve joint stability and balance
  • Support posture and mobility
  • Increase overall endurance for outdoor activity

Two to three strength-training sessions per week provide a solid foundation.

Build Now, Enjoy All Summer

Spring is an ideal time to establish a strength routine before summer schedules fill up. Building strength now allows outdoor activities to feel easier and more enjoyable later, rather than exhausting or uncomfortable, especially for those trying to keep up with children or grandchildren.

Hiring a certified and experienced trainer can provide structured options that complement your lifestyle, including outdoor bodyweight training, or gym routines.

A Season of Renewal

April is a reminder that movement doesn’t have to be complicated or confined indoors. Gardening, walking trails, hiking, and consistent strength training all contribute to better health, energy, and enjoyment of the season.

As spring unfolds, use this time to reconnect with movement, soak up fresh air and sunshine, and build habits that support an active summer ahead.
