Ask Daryl – Your Professional Organizer: Small things

Paperclips, buttons, the earring you can’t find the mate to, loose keys, and other small things we stumble upon in our homes often end up in a very special drawer we call the ‘Junk Drawer.’ We all have one because some things just don’t have another place to be or it’s much easier to put them in that drawer. Now, this place can get quite out-of-control and way too full, so it’s a good idea to take a look inside to see what’s there and hopefully reduce the clutter.
Because, when it’s time to check it out, oh, what a surprise! Not only are all the things we remember putting there still there, but so much more. So, now what? First, dump the contents onto a towel covered table or counter. Then start separating every item into piles of like things. Next, look for things that can be stored in other locations. For instance; there may be a container of paperclips on a desk or maybe you found the match to that missing earring.
A junk drawer is a necessity, and some things live better in that space. Twist ties and rubber bands can be placed in small baggies and stored there. Cords can be bound to save space or use drawer organizers for all those loose batteries, hair ties, and change. Whatever your junk drawer contains will need to be checked on every now and again, and when you do you may find something you forgot you even had. Exploring your junk drawer can be an eye opener. So, dump and enjoy the experience.
It’s as simple as that!
