Ask Daryl – Your Professional Organizer: Unpacking

Confusion Solution

When we move from one home to another, we often find ourselves storing boxed items in one or two rooms. Maybe that’s because the boxes weren’t labeled for which rooms they belong, or we just gave up and put them out of sight. Well, I’m here to let you in on some ways you can tackle those boxes without stress.
Every room has some sort of disorder after a move, so before you start opening up boxes it’s important to deal with one room at a time and one item at a time. Start in the room you use the most for relaxing and comfort. Maybe that’s the living room, a den, or your bedroom. Look around each room to see what storage options you have. For instance, can clothes be sorted and put in drawers or hung in a closet? Is there a hutch in the living room that could be used for knick-knacks? Identify what is in each room to see where things belong and if you can put them away. By focusing on one room at a time, you will wind up with order and then you can start to open a box or two and begin the process of putting those items in their proper places.
Unless you like hunting for treasure, mark boxes ahead of time with the room in which they belong. Even though you will end up with boxes in each room, at least when you open them you won’t be running all over the house searching for what goes where.
The feeling you get when you have accomplished small goals will be the motivation for fine-tuning your living spaces.
It’s as simple as that!
