Uncle Jack Fultz’s Memories of Carter County: A century of stewardship

Deer season – or at least modern gun season – just wrapped up. We still have a muzzleloader season later this month, and archery season runs through January. Whitetail deer are plentiful today, and we have plenty of chances to get one. (If we can manage our own time well enough to get into the woods.)

But we shouldn’t take this abundance of game for granted. The reasons we have these opportunities today are because of the efforts of our forebears, who took proactive steps to preserve our woodlands and properly manage our game.

Without their foresight, and action in forming groups like the Izaak Walton League, we might not have the outdoor opportunities we enjoy today.

If you went deer hunting in Carter County this season, take a minute to remember and thank Mr. A.J. Stamper and his friends for their contributions to conservation.
