Uncle Jack Fultz’s Memories of Carter County: Memories of Christmases past

From five cent Christmas cards on offer from the paper in 1925, and suggestions of musical gifts, to $1.50 Christmas layer cakes, it can be fun to look at old Christmas advertisements and marvel at the rate of inflation over the years.

But, more so than adverts for Christmas gifts, it was an article from Christmas Day, 1924 that caught our eye this week. Like the Carter County Herald, we will be “closing the year with a thankful heart” for our subscribers, advertisers, and contributors. As we enter our third year of publication – and complete our first full year – we want to thank you all.

We still have another full issue before the New Year greets us, and many interesting historical stories still to explore in the year ahead.

While we may be enjoying our Christmas music on a digital player, rather than on the “phonographs” or “player pianos” advertised in the pages of the Herald, we continue to find that the spirit of Carter County and her people has remained much the same over the last 100 years, despite the changes in technology and population.

Doubt it? Just look at the effort poured into programs like Silver Bells and Project Merry Christmas. Look at the outpouring of community support for Christmas at the Depot, and the efforts of regular, everyday folks across the county to make sure every child has the chance to enjoy the wonder and joy of presents on Christmas morning.

The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Carter County. Just as it was 100 years ago. Just as it always has been.
