Local student to participate in Johns Hopkins healthcare training

Mabry invited by VP for education at Envision

This summer, Grayson student Kara Mabry will join outstanding students from across the nation to take part in a unique academic and career-oriented development experience, at NYLF Advanced Medicine and Healthcare, Johns Hopkins University. NYLF: Advanced Medicine and Healthcare is one of the Envision by WorldStrides family of programs (www.envisionexperience.com) that enable students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.

Kara was nominated via formal invitation by Dr. Jan Sikorsky, Vice President of Education for Envision. In addition to being an all-honors and 4.0 student, Mabry is very involved in extracurricular activities. She is the community service chair for her school’s national beta club, a valuable member of the academic team, a unified club member, a Future Business Leader of America competitor, and a Technology Student Association fashion designer. In her free time, she runs a baking business and plays live music shows for extra sources of income. Mabry said she plans to attend the University of Kentucky, majoring in biomedical sciences. Someday, she said, she would like to be the chief of neurosurgery at the University of Kentucky hospital. She is most looking forward to the connections she will make, and the hands-on experience.

“I want to thank my mother for putting up with my constant yapping about this, my pap for giving me fundraising ideas, and God for making everything possible,” Mabry said.

“I am excited for Kara to meet, work, and collaborate with fellow high-aspiring students from other cities and schools,” said Dr. Sikorsky. “NYLF: Advanced Health and Medicine is a wonderful opportunity for ambitious young students to explore their interests outside the classroom and discover how to innovate and think creatively through hands-on immersive learning,” she continued. “Our students are challenged with real-world simulations and problems, working together to develop unique solutions and projects to bring life to their studies and career interests.”
