It is here! The high school and middle school essay contest. The theme is “Why do we need a public library?” The Carter County Public Library is conducting an essay contest, with cash prizes to be given away to the winners. There will be six winners chosen. Three from the high school and three from middle school levels. The contest is open to all individuals in the Carter County area, whether they be in home-school or enrolled in the public school, all entries are accepted. All entries must be submitted to either the Grayson or Olive Hill Branch of the Carter County Public Library. For the high school level there will be a first prize of $100.00, second prize $75.00 and third prize winner will receive $50.00. For our middle schoollevel, the first prize will be $75.00, second prize $50.00 and third prize winner will be $25.00.

All information should have been sent home from school. However, in case you missed it, or for home-school students, we are posting the rules here. There will be NO entries accepted after April 27, 2024. So, get busy writing! All entries will become the property of Carter County Public Library. Some entries may be published in the Carter County Times Newspaper. Judging will be done between April 29 through May 8. Winners will be announced on May 10, 2024. Prizes may be picked up at the Olive Hill Branch any time after announcement.

All entries should be original work, any quotations or copyrighted materials used in the essay must be identified property. Failure to identify non-original work will disqualify the paper. Entries for high school level must be 500 words; middle school level 400 words; both levels will be typed, 12 point, double spaced, Times New Roman font.

No personal information should be in the essay. Name, school, and grade should be on a cover sheet only.

Good Luck! I hope to receive a lot of entries. I know we have some great writers out there that will do us proud. If you have any questions call or stop by either the Grayson or Olive Hill Branch of the Carter County Public Library. We had a great turnout for our Eclipse Watch Party. We had over 60 in attendance, and even more showed up to pick up eclipse glasses. Thank you to all that came out to celebrate! You are awesome! Everyone seemed to enjoy the food, conversations, observations, and activities. The kids had a lot of learning activities about the eclipse. Our libraries are growing. All because of you, who came out and continue to come out to our meetings and enjoy our programming. Thank you all so much for your wonderful support!
