Community mourns loss

Two West Carter youth killed in traffic accident

Staff Report
Carter County Times

The West Carter High School community is mourning the loss of two members of their senior class lost in an automobile accident last week. Garrett Paul Belcher and Brent Michael King, both 17, of Olive Hill, passed away last Tuesday following an accident on State Route 2, just past SR 59.

Officers with the Kentucky State Police, Ashland post, confirmed the location and date of the accident, but couldn’t provide any further information on the still active investigation.

On Wednesday the Carter County School System issued a release stating they were “deeply saddened to learn” of the loss, adding, “words are inadequate to express our heartfelt condolences.”

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family, friends, and classmates during this very difficult time,” it continued.

Despite the loss of their teammate the West Carter Comets football team, which King served on as a wide receiver and defensive safety, chose to go on with their scheduled game against Prestonsburg on Friday night. The visiting Blackcats presented the host team with a flower basket in honor of King, and teammates carried his jersey onto and off the field to open the evening.

Both boys were laid to rest on Sunday, following ceremonies conducted at Globe Funeral Chapel, with King laid to rest at the Wilson Cemetery, in Olive Hill following services for Belcher, who was laid to rest in the Burchett-Dailey Cemetery.

The thoughts of the staff at the Carter County Times stays with the family and friends of both young men, and the entire community, during this difficult time.
