For Carter County Times
These words remind me of an old song when I was growing up that I heard sang many times in little country churches and house prayer meetings. They would sing the question, “What do you think about Jesus?” And of course they would sing the response, “He’s alright!” The chorus was a repeat of the question with the response being, “He’s alright!” Then they would sing “He healed my body and He’s alright.” Then another verse would be, “He saved my soul and He’s alright!,” etc.
When you really think about it, He is more than alright! Alright is the informal way of writing “all right.” It can stand in for “okay,” like the sandwich you had for lunch that was just alright, it was neither great nor terrible. In a nutshell, alright means “fine” or “satisfactory.”
As I have grown and matured in the Lord over the years, I know that phrase isn’t one I would use to describe Jesus. He is not just, okay! I have a deep personal relationship with Jesus. He is my Lord and Savior, my healer, my peace, etc.
So, the question “What do you think about Jesus?” is one of the most important in the Christian faith. In the New Testament, Jesus Himself asked His disciples, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son, is He?” (Matthew 22:42), and in the Gospel of John, the same question is posed to the crowd at the Feast of Booths (John 7:1–13).
Some think Jesus was merely a good man, a moral teacher, or even a man who believed He was God. Others have no clear idea at all. The Bible teaches that a correct understanding of who Jesus is is essential for saving faith. Believing in a Jesus of your own imagination is not the same as believing in the Savior God has revealed.
According to Scripture, Christian teaching holds that Jesus is God incarnate, fully God and fully man, born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14). The Messiah, the promised King and Savior foretold in the Old Testament. The Son of God, the unique Son of the Father, with all the fullness of God’s nature (Colossians 2:9). The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). The Savior and Lord, who died willingly for our sins, rose again, and offers eternal life to those who believe in Him.
The apostle Paul said, “I want to know Him, so that I may know Him more deeply” (Philippians 3:10). Knowing Jesus is not just about facts, it’s about relationship. The more we understand His character, mission, and sacrifice, the more we are drawn to follow Him in every area of life.
In short, “What do you think about Jesus?” is not just a historical or theological question, it’s a personal, life-changing decision that shapes your destiny. Amen! So be it!
